Why We Still Need Storytellers?

"Somewhere between the whispering woods and the old stones where time has worn away the names, a fire burns."

We call it The Black Dog Tavern, and if you’re here out of curiosity, community, or some half-remembered story, then you’re welcome.

This place isn’t just a Discord server, or a blog, or a zine project.

It’s a warm room built from fantasy, imagination, and a stubborn refusal to let go of the magic in collaborative storytelling. It’s for the people who still believe that sitting around a table, virtual or otherwise, and spinning worlds into being is a sacred act.

Why do we tell stories?

The world feels louder these days. Faster.

Algorithms scrape everything into paste, and nuance gets flattened under the next ‘hot take’ or ‘killer app’.

But stories, authentic stories, resist that flattening. They ask for attention. They demand meaning.

TTRPGs, when done right, are modern folklore. They’re messy, improvised, alive. They rarely follow the plan, and they are better for it.

They let us slip into someone else’s skin, carry burdens that are not our own, and shape a world through the twin forces of chance and choice. (And math rocks!)

In a time when reality feels brittle, I think that’s more important than ever.

Why places like the Tavern are important

Here in the Tavern we see the value of small, intentional things; a bad dice roll teaches more than a lucky one, and that world-building should always leave room for ghosts. Within horror, there is always space for tenderness, and hope can still sting; that the most powerful rules are the ones your players never see. I believe in zines over franchises, craft over content, myth over marketing. And I believe that when you tell a story with someone, I mean really tell it, you cannot walk away unchanged. There’s still room in this world for places like The Black Dog Tavern: places that welcome strangeness, reward creativity, and hold a little space for grief, wonder, and absurdity, sometimes all in the same scene.

What’s coming?

The Tavern is still growing, but here’s what’s on the fire:

  • Zines Monthly one-shots, player aids, and system-neutral tools. Some under the 5E OGL, some for strange new systems. Crafted with care.

  • Stories Essays, dev logs, and behind-the-scenes looks into the Echo Walkers universe — a place where metaphysics unravel and memory has teeth.

  • Community A Discord server for players, writers, artists, and GMs. Thoughtful. Weird. Kind.

  • Other stuff as we think of it Who knows, some of it might actually be useful

It’s a little handmade kingdom at the edge of the map — and I’m inviting you in.

Take a Seat

If you’ve ever drawn a dungeon on the back of a receipt, homebrewed a god just to mess with one player, or cried when a character who never existed sacrificed everything, you’ve already been here.

So take a seat. The fire’s warm. The stories are waiting. And the world could use more of them.
